1. EXTENSIVE DESIGN CHOICES
  • 5 standard contrasting colours
  • 21 co-ordinated designers colours if needed for design reasons
2. CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY
  • In excess of 50MPa concrete compressive strength. Standard concrete pavers are only 35MPa +/- 5 MPa
  • Consistent paver thickness exceeds AS/NZS 4455
  • Slip resistance is Class V (best category) when tested according to the Wet Pendulum Test
    AS/NZS 4586:2004
  • Anti-efflorescence treatment minimizes colour lightening

Availability: Stone Directions concrete tactile pavers are extensively used in Brisbane and Sydney architectural projects. Architects and builders in Melbourne and throughout Queensland and NSW have also been active users of Stone Directions tactiles for many years. The pavers are manufactured in Brisbane and transported long distances without any damage because of our highly effective packaging method.

Product Description:

Concrete tactile pavers are also known as Tactiles, Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (or TGSI) and even Hazard Pavers. They have been designed to aid the mobility of vision impaired people. The Australian Standard AS 1428.4 (Design for Access and Mobility - Part 4, Tactile Ground Surface Indicators for the orientation of people with vision impairment), sets out the strict requirements for the design of tactile pavers plus the circumstances in which they should be used.

Therefore, it is critical for ethical and litigation reasons, that architects and builders only use products that meet the conditions imposed by the standard. Stone Directions concrete tactile pavers meet those standards.

Slip resistance is the other critical element of a tactile paver that should be considered by architects, landscape architects and contractors. Stone Directions tactile pavers have the highest class of slip resistance available.

Product Features:

  • The design conforms to Australian Standard AS/NZS 1428.4.
  • Both styles have a slip resistance of Class ‘V’ (best category) when tested according to the Wet Pendulum Test method AS/NZS 4586:2004
  • Cautional style (Type B) paver has 35 mm dia raised dots
  • Directional style (Type C) paver has 35 mm wide raised ribs.
  • The raised sections have a textured surface which improves slip resistance.
  • The 300 square size is the most efficient size to meet AS 1428.4 requirements.
  • The thickness consistency is better than required by AS 4455.1997
  • They are very durable because they are made from high strength (In excess of 50MPa) wet cast concrete.

Important notes on colour:

The colours depicted in these photos of the colour range and projects should be taken as indicative only because of differences in colour monitors and lighting conditions during photography.Tactile pavers are made with uV resistant oxides but the colours of product may change over time due to the effects of water and efflorescence. See our notes in the Technical section on efflorescence and colour in concrete for more information.

How to Specify:

When specifying Stone Directions’ pavers it is important to accurately refer to all of the following features:

Stone Directions - Surface Finish - Product Type - Size - Colour - Product Code

eg. Stone Directions, Tactile, Paver, 300 x 300, Sungold colour, Code No. TC3030SG

The tables below show the relevant product type, size and colour for each paver style.

If you are required to allow for different brands of pavers it is important to specify the following basic standards to ensure that other pavers being considered are of a comparable standard to Stone Directions:

  1. Pavers must have a concrete compressive strength in excess of 50MPa.
  2. Pavers must be manufactured using wet cast technology.
  3. Pavers must have a thickness consistency of no more than +/- 2.5 mm.
  4. Pavers must have a plan size consistency of no more than +/- 3.0 mm.
  5. Pavers must be given an effective pre-delivery anti-efflorescence treatment.
  6. The colour must be equivalent to the specified Stone Directions colour.
